Four Roses Distillery (April 2009)

The Four Roses Distillery was built in 1910 and features a unique Spanish Mission-Style architecture. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Yeast is grown in these 1200 gallon tanks before being added to the mash. Four Roses uses 5 different strains of yeast, which is very unusual. Along with their 2 mash bills this gives them 10 different recipes to use in their products.

After the first distillation in the column still the spirit is distilled a second time in a pot still known as a doubler.

During the walking tour we were given a taste of fresh whiskey as it comes off the still. This unaged clear spirit is known as 'new make' or 'white dog'. It is very fruity and floral, and much tastier than most people would expect.

The Four Roses visitor's center and gift shop. A short film and walking tour of the distillery are offered. Call or check their website for hours. Barreling and warehousing are handled at their unique facility at Cox's Creek KY, approximately one hour away.
